The Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga is a foundational sequence that builds strength, flexibility, and endurance. Understanding each pose in depth ensures proper alignment, technique, and flow. The Counting Method, a specific breathing technique, is integral to the practice. It involves synchronizing each breath with movement, cultivating focus and discipline, and enhancing the internal energy (prana) throughout the practice. This method not only supports physical endurance but also deepens the meditative aspect of yoga, helping to quiet the mind and stay present in the moment.
Understanding how to align the body correctly during yoga postures ensures safety and maximizes the benefits of each asana. Breath work (pranayama) helps guide movement and focuses energy, while energetic principles explore how our life force (prana) flows within us, enhancing both physical and mental well-being.
Yoga is rooted in a rich tradition of history and philosophy that spans thousands of years. The study of the Yoga Sutras provides essential guidance on the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga. Exploring the Subtle Body helps to understand energy channels, chakras, and how these interact with the physical form.
A solid understanding of anatomy is vital for teaching yoga safely and effectively. Learning to make physical adjustments to students allows you to guide them into better alignment and deeper awareness. Hands-on teaching practice builds confidence and helps refine communication skills, especially for those new to teaching.
Holding space means creating a supportive, non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to explore their practice. As a teacher, this involves both physical and emotional awareness, encouraging students to be present, while fostering a sense of calm and trust in the space you’ve created.
Breathing exercises will help you enhance mental clarity and emotional balance. They’ll also deepen relaxation, improve focus, and reduce stress throughout the retreat experience.
Yoga is not just about physical movement; it’s also about calming the mind. Relaxation and meditation techniques help students reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Learning and teaching these practices enhances the holistic benefits of yoga, leading to greater mindfulness and emotional balance.
